There are many reasons someone would want lip filler to help achieve their goals. Some may want to replace the lost volume from aging so they have smooth, plump lips like they did years ago, and others want to enhance their natural look with something fuller and more significant.
But “lip filler” doesn’t encompass the many options, methods, or what you can expect from the process as a whole. Here to fill that role like she often fills lips is Elizabeth Sippey, our Aesthetic Physician Assistant.
What is lip filler?
“Lip filler, medically referred to as a lip augmentation, is a cosmetic injectable procedure that modifies the shape or volume of the lips.”
There are many types of fillers, consisting of multiple different substances including hyaluronic acid, collagen, fat, and implants.
What types of lip filler are best?
“I recommend hyaluronic acid lip filler due to its safety (it’s able to be dissolved) and ability to draw in water giving the lips a more hydrated appearance.”
The best part about this type of filler is that if you don’t like the look, the filler will be absorbed by your own body over time. That, plus hyaluronic acid is something you already produce in your body and is a very natural option.
What does lip filler do & why do people use lip filler?
“Patients seek lip filler to enhance the natural shape of the lip, restore or add volume, correct asymmetry, or increase projection of the lips.”
Each person has unique goals but these are common reasons we see people in for consultations about fillers. Whether you want to dramatically change your look or replace lost volume due to aging, fillers can help.
How much lip filler do you need?
It depends on the individual and their goals. Since every person is different and will want different looks with their filler, the amount is customized to fit their needs.
“I take a conservative approach and typically start with 1 syringe of dermal filler (1mL) for the lips, which most patients are happy with. If a patient requires more for their desired appearance, this can be done over a series of appointments.”
Does lip filler hurt?
“There is pain, but it is temporary. Most patients tolerate lip filler fine.”
But if it’s truly a concern, a topical numbing cream can be used along with ice to numb the area and reduce the risk of bruising. Most dermal fillers also contain lidocaine, a numbing medication, so after the initial injection the treatment is fairly comfortable.
Is lip filler safe?
Lip filler has a low risk of complications when treatment is administered by a trained practitioner in a medical setting.
“Although rare, the most serious risk with dermal filler is a vascular occlusion, which happens when blood supply is blocked off due to the filler being injected into an artery, which is why going to a qualified injector is important so the complication can be recognized and treated immediately.”
According to The Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology, less than 0.05% of filler injections result in vascular occlusion. In my three years of injecting, I have never experienced a vascular occlusion, but I am trained on assessing for and treating one should it occur.
What can I expect after lip filler has been injected?
The most common complications from lip filler are bruising and swelling. You can expect some degree of swelling in your lips after the procedure and occasionally some bruising. Keeping your head elevated and icing intermittently can help with swelling.
Are there things you can’t do immediately after the injection?
After lip filler injections, you should keep your head elevated and avoid touching or manipulating the treatment area for the 1st day (including kissing, drinking with a straw and applying products), avoid exercise for 24 hours and avoid blood thinning medications (Aspirin, Excedrin, ibuprofen, Advil, Aleve) for 48 hours.
How long will lip filler last?
The short answer is anywhere from 6-12 months. Longevity depends on the product used and how quickly the patient metabolizes it.
How much does lip filler cost?
“On average, expect to spend around $700 for 1 syringe of lip filler. The cost depends on the product used, which is a decision you and your provider can make together depending on your treatment goals.”
How do I choose an injector?
When choosing an injector it is crucial to do your research.
“I recommend inquiring about their experience and training. Your injector should be a trained medical professional who has experience in aesthetic procedures and continues to keep up with advancements in their training.”
This ensures your providers ability to assess for and treat complications as well as deliver consistently positive results. Requesting to see before and after photos is also appropriate to ensure you share a similar sense of aesthetically pleasing results, this can often be found through their social media page.
